Moving email from Microsoft Outlook to Apple Mail using MessageSave

April 4th, 2008

We’re currently moving from PC to Mac and part of this process involves transferring our email from Microsoft Outlook 2004 to Apple Mail. This is by no means a straight forward process when you have 2GB worth of email spanning 7 years! That was until we came across a tool named MessageSave by TechHit! Read on…

For those of you who have attempted this before you will be all to familiar with the usual processes you have to go through to move your email from one application to another. You normally have to transfer a folder at a time and use another application as a middle man - typically Outlook Express. This is no problem if you only have a handful of emails but if you’re like us and have several thousand this is just not an option.

MessageSave is a plug-in for Microsoft Outlook which exports all of you email into various formats, including MBOX - the format used by Apple Mail. According to the feature list MessageSave states that it retains full details including file attachments and dates. There’s an evaluation version (limited to 50 emails at a time) which is great for making sure it will work on your computer.

The process couldn’t be simpler. You select the folder you want to export (selecting the Inbox will export everything) and click the MessageSave icon. A dialog box appears where you can choose your export options such as format type, include sub folders, retain email data and so forth. Then click the Save button.

Considering we have thousands of emails, I was expecting the export process to take a while. In actual fact, the whole process took just a few minutes and went very smoothly. The next step is to fire up Apple Mail and import the MBOX files. This takes a bit longer to complete so it’s an ideal time to make a drink.

The full instructions for exporting email from Outlook to an Apple Mac are provided on the TechHit website.

That’s it! It’s really that simple and painless. The end result was our email up and running on Apple Mail with all the original dates and attachments. The full version of MessageSave is available from the TechHit website for $49.95 and we’d highly recommend it to anyone. What a time saver!
